Did Roblox Really Boost PlayStation’s 123 Million Active Users?

With the recent spike in Sony’s PlayStation monthly active users, many observers are speculating that the release of Roblox on the gaming platform in the previous year has something to do with it.

When the Sony PlayStation was first released in 1994, it practically and singlehandedly revolutionized home console gaming. Through the years, the PlayStation and its continually advancing iterations have made so much of an impact on the gaming world and industry. Today, in its fifth iteration, the PlayStation 5, which has sold over 17.92 million units in 2023, surpassing both that of the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Xbox, has continued to deliver the kind of gaming experience that has kept it in the lead throughout the years since 1994.

Sony’s new milestone

Taking this into account, Sony has also announced a new milestone in PlayStation gaming. By the end of 2023, the entire PlayStation market had reached over 123 million monthly active users (MAU), meaning that this is the approximate number of individual PlayStation accounts that have logged into the PlayStation Network during the specified time. However, it was unclear if it was just for the month of December or for the year. Regardless, this is no doubt a huge indicator of the PlayStation’s lead in today’s electronic gaming environment. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hiroki Totoki also hinted that there was one free-to-play game released on the PlayStation during that time, which had a huge and significant contribution to the PlayStation’s current successful predicament.

Did Roblox help?

As of today, there are already a number of free-to-play titles available for both the PS4 and PS5. But despite the lack of an official statement, many believe the contributing game to be Roblox, which was released in October 2023 for the PlayStation. Roblox was already initially successful as a popular go-to console game when it came out on Xbox, but with the PlayStation, many observers have noted the increase in PlayStation-related revenue, especially in microtransaction spending, coinciding with the Roblox release. With the kind of popularity and game addiction that Roblox is very well known for, and despite the influence of other free-to-play titles on the platform, the huge size of the Roblox gaming community can be viewed as a strong attribute of the game being one of the most likely reasons for the recent boost in PlayStation activity.

PlayStation has numerous F2P games though

However, as mentioned, there are other popular and hugely gamer-populated F2P titles on the PlayStation platform. Games like World of Tanks, Overwatch 2, Call of Duty: Warzone, (of course) Fortnite, and a whole bunch of other games can all be pointed out as responsible for contributing to the skyrocketing of the PlayStation’s MAU count. It isn’t that hard to comprehend that popular games on other gaming platforms would no doubt contribute to the usage of the console if the particular console owners had access to those games.

The practice of rival gaming console manufacturers to limit their own branded games to their own console brand exclusively has been more of a detriment as far as both sales and console use go. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is not available on the PlayStation, and Horizon: Zero Dawn is not available on the Xbox either. However, things are hopefully going to change as the times are pushing the console manufacturers to go beyond the growing obsolescence of platform exclusivity.
