Roblox’s Latest Update Is Incompatible with Linux When Run Using Wine
Roblox blocks the use of Wine due to security and compatibility concerns but is working on “fixing existing issues.”
Playing Roblox on Linux using the Wine compatibility layer seems to be coming to an end.
The new version of the game is in the testing phase, but players quickly noticed it doesn’t seem to work with the Wine compatibility layer, which is capable of running Windows apps on Linux. One of the developers mentioned that the block is intentional due to a plethora of concerns:
“Unfortunately, this block was intentional. With the Windows 64-bit client launch, we made the conscious decision to block the use of Wine. We came to this decision due to a combination of security and compatibility concerns. As a Linux user, I am sure you understand the challenges of the Windows ecosystem. Wine is not officially supported, but we are committed to working towards compatibility where possible. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a specific timeline for this support. However, I assure you that it remains a priority for our team.”
Currently, the Roblox team is performing testing to find and sort out issues, with another staff member saying, “We are not trying to punish the use of Wine,” and later adding, “Wine remains a priority for our team, and we are certainly not deaf to the voices of our community.”
As of today, there is no set timeline for when Roblox will become compatible with Wine, but we hope it will be soon.
