Three Years In: How Is Fortnite Faring Against Roblox?
It sure is the game that every kid on the block is playing but, how is Fortnite faring against Roblox? Let’s discuss.
Alright, so three years ago, Epic Games threw down the gauntlet. They weren’t just content with Fortnite being one of the biggest battle royale games out there – they wanted more. They wanted in on Roblox’s turf. User-generated content, creator-driven worlds, and a slice of that ever-growing community-driven gaming empire. Sounds ambitious? Yeah, it was. But now, three years later, how’s that working out for them?
Fortnite’s UGC gamble – smart or overambitious?
Roblox has been the king of user-generated content (UGC) for ages. Like, you want a game where you can build, create, and do whatever? Roblox is basically the YouTube of gaming. Epic Games, seeing the potential, decided to give Fortnite an upgrade. They rolled out Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), giving players actual developer-level tools to build custom experiences within Fortnite’s ecosystem.
And it sounded amazing. Fortnite already had Creative Mode, but this was a step beyond. Imagine crafting full-blown games inside Fortnite – like how people build entire RPGs in Roblox. Epic even said, “Hey, make something cool, and we’ll pay you for it.” That’s right, creators earn a cut from in-game sales. Sounds like a win, right? Well… yes and no.
The good, the bad, and the… Confusing?
Let’s talk numbers. Epic has poured hundreds of millions into creator payouts – $352 million, to be exact. That’s a LOT of money going into Fortnite Creative maps. But while that sounds great, it doesn’t necessarily mean Fortnite has caught up to Roblox.
Roblox boasts a 250 million player base every month, hopping between thousands of games created by everyday users. Fortnite? Reports put it around 70 million monthly active players. Still impressive, but there’s a gap. And that gap? It’s the community-driven culture that makes Roblox, well, Roblox.
Where Fortnite stumbles against Roblox
One big problem? Accessibility. Roblox’s game creation tools are incredibly user-friendly. A 10-year-old can hop in, mess around, and within a few hours, they’ve got something playable. Fortnite’s Unreal Editor? Not so much. It’s powerful, but it comes with a steep learning curve. Unless you’re already familiar with Unreal Engine, diving in can feel intimidating.
Then there’s the culture of creation. Roblox is built on people experimenting, building, sharing, and it’s been that way for years. Fortnite is still figuring out how to foster that kind of ecosystem. Right now, UGC in Fortnite feels more like a cool feature rather than the backbone of the platform. And let’s talk variety. Roblox has EVERYTHING. First-person shooters? Yep. Obstacle courses? Of course. Weirdly specific role-playing servers where you pretend to be a cashier at a digital McDonald’s? Oh, you bet. Fortnite? Still feels like “Battle Royale, but with extra steps.”
Does Fortnite have a shot?
Here’s the thing – Epic Games isn’t dumb. They’re not just sitting back and hoping for the best. They’re constantly tweaking UEFN, adding features, and throwing money at creators to keep them invested. And they have one huge advantage over Roblox: graphics and polish.
Let’s be honest, Roblox’s graphics look like a potato with legs. Fortnite, on the other hand, has Unreal Engine backing it up. So, if Epic can make UGC easier and more appealing, they have a real shot at grabbing a bigger market share.
Who’s winning?
Right now? Roblox is still ahead. It has the numbers, the creator-first culture, and an easier learning curve. But Fortnite isn’t failing – it’s just not catching up as fast as Epic probably hoped. Will Fortnite’s UGC scene ever be as massive as Roblox’s? Maybe. But they need to focus on making creation easier, pushing more diverse experiences, and keeping their community engaged. If they can nail that, then who knows? Maybe three more years from now, we’ll be asking if Roblox can keep up with Fortnite instead.
For now, though? Roblox is still king. But Fortnite? It’s not out of the fight yet.
